My illustration project of the late great Amy Winehouse.
Researching for a portrait illustration of Amy Winehouse.
I have always loved the style and look of Amy Winehouse. Not only was she an amazing vocalist and song writer, but she had a really unique personal fashion style too. Part ska, part rude girl, with a touch of The Ronettes thrown in. As a fashion illustrator, I am always interested in people’s fashion sense, and love to get a chance to illustrate that. To start with I researched lots of photos of Amy Winehouse. This is the best way to get started on a portrait of somebody. Its important to really immerse yourself in that person and try to really get a feel for their fabulous fashion sense and personal look and style. Here are some photos I pulled up to work from.
Starting the portrait illustration of Amy
Next when I had enough photo research to go from, I started to rough sketch Amy. You can see this example above. When doing a portrait illustration it’s best to look for the features that really make somebody’s unique look and sort of exaggerate those without making it cartoony. After the rough sketch, I then did a more refined sketch and scanned that into Photoshop. It took quite a while to clean up the illustration in Photoshop.
Adding colour to the illustration.
I wanted to keep a real fashion illustration look to the artwork. So I tried to give it a contemporary look. The style of doing pencil fashion illustrations is quite popular right now, so this is the style I chose to go with. I love the bow in her hair, and I tried to incorporate some water colour techniques in the polka dots on the bow, as in addition to pencil, water colour fashion illustrations are also popular right now too.
The final illustration.
Here is the final Amy Winehouse illustration, after I added digital colour and more detail on Photoshop ! I hope you like it ! I love my job as a fashion illustrator !
