Live Illustration at Selfridges
Live Illustration Event for Folli Follie
This month, I was really excited to be able to team up with two iconic brands in the fashion industry. I was commissioned to take part in a live illustration event at Folli Follie in Selfridges. Folli Follie are an iconic brand that offers jewellery, watches, and accessories. I was drawing customers who had dropped by to take advantage of the great sales available that night. Selfridges were staging a student night and were offering drinks, nibbles, and a generous discount. Add to that a complimentary live fashion illustration supplied by me, and it was a win/ win night ! Check out the picture of my desk below, all set up and ready to go. More and more companies are realizing that live illustration is a great way to get people interested in a department. I just start drawing and people who are naturally curious usually wander over and ask me what I am doing. Most cannot resist posing for a cheeky little live illustration ! I make sure I have lots of signage too, just to make sure customers can easily see what is going on.
Student evening featuring Live Illustration
The student evening was from 4pm till 10 pm, when the store closes. I was just booked for four hours though, between 4 pm and 8 pm. A four hour slot is usually adequate for any live fashion illustration event. Any less time than that, then it does become a struggle to fit everyone in that wants to be drawn. As you can see from my pictures below, the sales staff were keen to have themselves illustrated as well ! Each sketch takes about ten minutes to draw. I use pencil to get the initial sketch down, and then I use brush pens to get the finished outline. The rest is done in markers or water colour paint. You do have to be fast in a live illustration situation, as you never have very much time per sketch as there is usually a big queue of people waiting. Have a look at the pictures below to see some of the images I created at Selfridges for Folli Follie. I love being a live illustrator, it’s so fun and gratifying.
All in all, a great time was had by all. Live illustration is a great thing to have at a company party, a Christmas party, a corporate bash, or a product launch. The possibilities are endless. Also available is live portrait illustration. This would be a great thing to offer for a beauty or cosmetics brand. I offer live illustration services on my website, if you want to take a peek. You can also take a look at my live illustration portfolio. I have worked for brands such as Ultimo, Juicy Couture, Reiss, Folli Follie and Links of London. I have worked at events such as Vogue’s Fashion Night out and in stores such as House of Fraser, Harrods and Selfridges. Being a live illustrator is the best job in the world….
