Live Illustration at the Style Saturday Event.
Walter and Herbert are an iconic eye wear brand that date back to 1946. They make all of their frames in England and their flagship store is in the leafy district of Seven Dials, London. Seven Dials is a great little shopping area, and is made up of seven little cobblestone streets that meet at a central roundabout. The area connects trendy Soho to the tourist hotspot Covent Garden. Each year, Style Saturday is held here in June come rain or shine! Style Saturday is a great street event where all of the roads in the area are pedestrianized and there are lots of exciting free giveaways, live music and great street food. I was really excited when Walter and Herbert contacted me with a view to illustrating at this live event for them. Live illustration is a great way to bring people and brands together at these kind of events.
So where does the Live Illustration fit in ?
As all of the streets were cordoned off, Walter and Herbert had the idea for me to sit at a stall outside their shop and offer live illustration portraits to any passers by. As Walter and Herbert are primarily an eye wear brand, customers were encouraged to try on a pair of their sunglasses or spectacles and have their own personalized portrait done wearing the frame of their choice. It was a great way for the customers to have fun, and for Walter and Herbert to show off their latest frames. Although we were incredibly busy and ended up having to turn some people away, I think the customers really enjoyed having their live portraits done. Each customer sat for 10 minutes for each portrait, whilst enjoying a thirst quenching gin and tonic. I have to say Walter and Herbert did an amazing job of coming up with creative ideas to help make the event a real success. After each person’s live portrait illustration was completed, the staff at Walter and Herbert quickly took a scan, and each customer portrait was added to the window. By the end of the day, we had a lovely window display of portraits! At any live illustration event, I think its important for the brand participating to get all of the sales staff on board to help out and to facilitate the smooth running of the event. The artist can try to help out with the running of it as much as they can, but often they get so involved with the actual illustrating, that they may need extra help in soliciting customers and with general crowd control !
A Look at some of the Live Illustration Portraits.
The Style Saturday event ended up being super busy which I actually prefer. When it’s busy like that, the atmosphere is really fun, and the time goes by so fast. I think we ended up doing something like 35 live illustration portraits in total. Have a look at some of the live portraits I did and see what you think !
I think you can see how pleased the customers were with the whole live illustration experience. There are a wealth of possibilities in providing this kind of activity at an event whether it be in a store, at a corporate party or at a press event or a product launch. From portraits to full length fashion illustration, to painting onto actual products, live illustration is fast gaining popularity and its guaranteed to create a buzz on any brand’s social media. Have a look at my live illustration services page on my website, to get some ideas. I have illustrated for brands such as Juicy Couture, Oasis, Reiss and Ultimo. I have worked in events at Harrods, Selfridges and House of Fraser to name just a few. If you are not planning on an event, why not take the plunge ? If you are, the best of luck on having an amazing event that will set your social media on fire and promote your brand in a way that is second to none !
